Why Is my Circuit Breaker Buzzing?

You expect your wiring to be perfect at all times when it comes to your home. It is not always possible for wiring problems to be solved on your own.

A buzzing sound coming from your circuit breaker is one example of a wiring problem. It's likely that you have noticed it because it is so irritating. A circuit breaker buzzing that doesn't get resolved can pose a serious threat to your safety. Find out why you may be hearing a buzzing sound and how to fix it.

CIRCUIT BREAKER BUZZING REASONS

  • Normal vibrations: A barely audible buzz or hum is normal. You may hear vibrations if you pay attention. Energy moves at a rapid pace through the panel. If the buzzing becomes more frequent than normal, it could be a sign that there is a problem.
  • Failure to trip: A circuit breaker's purpose is to cut off power when the current becomes too high. If a circuit fails to trip, the current flows through the wire, and the circuit is damaged. If you hear the circuit breaker buzzing, it could indicate that the circuit is not working properly. Overheating can be dangerous and could result in a faulty circuit.
  • Unsealed wire: An intermittent buzzing sound can be caused by a loosely connected wire or a wire that isn't connected properly to the circuit breaker. Even sparks can be found by opening the panel. The easiest way to determine the problem circuit is to turn off all circuits and then turn them on one at a time until you hear the buzzing sound.
