How to maintain your home appliances and devices

Everybody uses multiple electrical appliances and devices every day. But do you consider your safety when using them? There is an increased risk of people forgetting about the dangers and hazards that these devices pose. Make sure you take the time to learn about safe use and share these principles with your family.

When using electric appliances, cords, or other equipment, safety rules are simple to follow. You only need to be aware of the dangers and take precautions. Here are some safety guidelines that you can refer to and share with everyone you know.

Appliances

  • Do not hesitate to ask for accreditation.
  • Make sure to unplug appliances that are not being used and keep them out of reach of children.
  • Heat generation appliances, e.g., for heat generation purposes, such as electric heaters, irons, and heating rods, should have adequate clearance to allow air circulation. Do not place toys or clothes near or over hot appliances.
  • Follow the instructions on your appliance, and do not attempt repairs or upgrades without first consulting them.
  • Avoid placing appliances near water sources such as bathtubs, sinks, and pools.
  • Do not use electrical equipment wet or barefoot.

Outlets

Modern homes have many electrical outlets that are open to the elements and can be dangerous for pets and children. To keep outlets safe, follow these steps.

  • Do not leave unused outlets unattended. To prevent any harm to children, cover them with plates or childproof caps.
  • Avoid overloading outlets with too many power lines or adapters.
  • Plugs and adapters should always be inserted into outlets that are suitable in size and weight.

Cords

Cords are used to increase the reach of electrical outlets. These tips will help you to keep your cords safe and in good condition.

  • To avoid any unpleasant incidents, make sure to check the cords regularly for cracks, kinks, frays, and burns.
  • Check that the cords are securely anchored to the outlets. Replace the outlet if the cord is not securely plugged in.
  • Extension cords should not be used at home on a regular basis. They should be used as a temporary solution.
  • The extension cord should be the right size and weight for the purpose and intended use. The cord should be rated for outdoor or indoor use, depending on the purpose.
  • The cord-outlet joint should not be placed in a location that is easily accessible to pets and children. These joints should be kept out of water sources such as bathtubs, bathrooms, and sinks.
